Can I Use a Plunger to Unclog a Sink?

drain cleaning

It started with slow drainage. It's turned into standing water. There's no doubt about it: your sink is clogged.

Now, you're wondering how to get it unclogged. In particular, you're wondering whether a plunger will do the trick. The short answer is: maybe. The longer answer is something we're going to expound on below.

Without further ado, here are the keys to using a plunger to unclog a sink.

What Type of Plunger Is Needed to Unclog a Sink?

Yes, a plunger can be used to unclog a sink. However, in some cases, more intensive measures will be required. If you'd like to give plunger-induced unclogging a go, you must first find the right type.

What we're speaking of is a sink plunger. This is a flat, simple plunger with no inner suction mechanism. It's essentially a stereotypical version of a plunger.

You can find one of these for as cheap as a few dollars at a big box store. Note, though, that they vary in quality, with the more expensive ones usually providing more suction.

How to Plunge a Sink

Now that we've discussed the type of plunger that's required let's discuss how to use it for the purpose of unclogging a sink. First and foremost, you need to fill the sink with water.

Ensure enough water is present so the plunger is entirely submerged when in use. If two sinks are connected to one another (such as with many kitchen sinks), fill both up with water.

Then, place the plunger straight down onto the sink drain until it's sealed. Once it's sealed, pull up and push down on it vigorously while keeping the seal in place.

Do this for 5 to 10 seconds, then pull off the seal. If you are successful, water will go rushing down the drain. If you aren't, you should try plunging it again.

Note that some sinks are too clogged to become unclogged by plungers alone. If the plunger isn't successful at unclogging your sink, you should use a drain snake or drain cleaning rod.

A cheap plastic snake might get the job done temporarily. However, in most cases, a large metal drain snake will be required to clear the clogged drain fully.

If you're unsuccessful at unclogging your drain, you should give your local plumber a call. They have all of the equipment needed to facilitate a full drain cleaning.
